General Guidelines for the 7th and 8th Grade programming at St Henry and St Mary parishes:
Registration for the year:
We ask that you register your child for classes by:
· Filling out a Faith Formation registration form so that we have your contact information
· Filling out an Annual Consent Form so that we have your permission for your child to participate
· Pay the yearly $35 per student fee to assist in purchasing of materials.
Some of the workshops and events have a “maximum number of students” so if you or your child are planning to attend any of these you must:
Minimum Hours Needed:
All 7th and 8th graders are to complete a minimum of 24 hours per year.
Attendance:
When registering for a workshop series you should plan to attend ALL of the dates listed – there is not make-up work available for most workshops. Remember that missing one week may keep you from understanding things on future dates. You will not be penalized for missing a class but you will only receive credit for the sessions you attend.
Anytime you attend a parish event for RE credit, please print and fill out an Event Form, then turn it in to the office to make sure you receive credit. You can always pick these forms up in the parish office.
Cancellation of classes:
If you are attending an evening class on campus – if Marshalltown Community School District cancels school or dismisses early due to weather we will automatically cancel any youth evening events also.
If you are attending a class that meets on Sunday morning – you can usually find the information at:
- TV: KCCI (channel 8) or WHO (channel 13)
- Radio: KDAO (99.5 FM) or KFJB (1230 AM) / KIX (101.1 FM)
(you can also check the corresponding website for any of these TV or Radio stations)
- Website: St MARY website: stmarysmtown.com on the Faith Formation page
- Facebook: on the St Mary, Marshalltown Facebook page
- St Henry Facebook
Illness or injury:
If your child is ill and cannot attend class, please feel free to contact Alissa Fulton at St. Henry or Ana Hernandez at St. Mary.
If your child becomes ill while in class parents will be contacted to pick up their child before class is over.
Phone:
All students are asked to keep cell phones off and put away during class. Any student needing to make a phone call can do so before or after class. A phone can be made available for students as needed.
If phones or other technological devices are a distraction during class catechists may collect them and hold onto them until the end of class.
Curriculum:
For 7th and 8th Grade we are using a variety of different curriculum and resources that are specifically designed for, or modified for, this age group. Some of the curriculum we may be using this year are:
· Encounter Bible Study with Mark Hart from Ascension Press
· Theology of the Body for Teens: Middle School Edition with Brian Butler, Jason Evert and Aimee and Colin MacIver from Ascension Press
· Friending Planet Earth from Center for Ministry Development
· The Catholic Connections Handbook for Middle Schoolers Second Edition from St Mary’s Press
· Altaration: The Mystery of the Mass Revealed from Ascension Press
Field Trips:
If a field trip is planned, parental permission forms are to be signed and returned prior to departure. Any student without a signed permission form will not be allowed on the field trip. Adult chaperones and drivers are often needed.
